Relationship Combines The Expertise Of The Market Leader In Marine Terminal Operations Software With The World Renowned Research Institution That Pioneered The Study Of Operations Research

OAKLAND, Calif. June 29, 2005 — Navis LLC, a global leader in enterprise software solutions for supply chain execution, has joined the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Foundation, Inc. Transformation Center in Monterey, California. The membership enables Navis to team with leading operations research experts to focus on optimization of operations for container terminals, distribution centers and rail terminals.

The NPS Foundation Transformation Center is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that helps facilitate interaction between the Naval Postgraduate School of Operations and Information Sciences and other military/government agencies with the private sector by providing a variety of benefits to member organizations.

With nearly 1,500 students, the Naval Postgraduate School of Operations and Information Sciences has played a significant role in the development of modern logistics and operations research. Professors from NPS' Operations Research Department and the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy achieved top ranking in the practice of operations research from Interfaces, a bi-monthly journal published by the Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences that concentrates on the application of operations research to real-world problems.

Navis' membership at the NPS Foundation Transformation Center includes teaming with professors and graduate students on real-life work challenges for Navis customers. For example, graduate students could examine the optimal way to unload cargo using an automated crane. Erik Tiemroth, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Executive Vice President at Navis, comments: "As the world's leading provider of mission critical information technology for marine terminals, we look forward to building a partnership with the NPS Foundation Transformation Center that will provide a lively interaction and exchange of information for both organizations.'' Tiemroth continued. "This partnership will increase our knowledge and pair us with proven experts ultimately benefiting our customers and the industry alike."

Rear Admiral David Bill III, USN (Ret.), Executive Director of the NPS Foundation, agrees that the partnership provides benefits for both organizations. "Partnering with Navis demonstrates our commitment to graduating the best-qualified maritime problem-solvers," Bill said. "Students who apply their research skills to real-life challenges will benefit from their experience with an industry standard product. The exposure to technologies and their practical applications will be useful during their military careers and beyond."

The Naval Postgraduate School of Operations and Information Sciences' student body consists of officers from the five U.S. uniformed services and a small number of civilian employees. The faculty — the majority of which are civilians — is drawn from a broad diversity of educational institutions and represent a prestigious collection of scholars.

Navis CEO John Dillon recently joined the Board of Directors at the NPS Foundation Transformation Center. The Center is currently focusing on maritime and homeland security, which is highly relevant to the containerized transportation industry that Navis serves.

"Navis continues to work with leaders in the transportation, maritime and technology industries, as well as educational institutions such as NPS to shape the future of the transportation industry," Dillon said. "The partnership between the NPS Foundation's Transformation Center and Navis will help us leverage key research and develop young talent.''
